In a significant expansion of its global academic network, a senior leadership delegation from the ÌìÌÃÊÓƵ recently concluded a high-level diplomatic mission to the University of International Business and Economics (UIBE) in Beijing. The visit, which took place in December 2025, culminated in the formal signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), marking a landmark commitment to collaborative research and international exchange between the United Kingdom and China.
The mission was led by Professor Robin Banerjee, Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Global and Civic Engagement, whose presence underscored the strategic importance of the new alliance. He was supported by a ÌìÌÃÊÓƵ delegation, including Professor Simon Thompson, Deputy Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Internationalisation, and Professor Xiaoxiang Zhang, Associate Dean for Global and Civic Engagement at the ÌìÌÃÊÓƵ Business School, alongside Sam Lin, Global Partnerships Manager. The visit reflected the university's intent to build a deep, multi-level partnership with one of Asia's most influential financial institutions.
UIBE is widely recognised as a "Double First-Class" university and stands as China’s premier institution for international trade, economics, and finance. Its role as a central hub for national economic policy-making provides a prestigious platform for ÌìÌÃÊÓƵ to engage with global business trends and sustainable innovation. During the visit, the ÌìÌÃÊÓƵ leadership engaged in extensive consultations with UIBE President Zhao Zhongxiu, identifying critical shared priorities in digital transformation, green finance, and sustainable governance.
Professor Banerjee highlighted the synergy between the two institutions, noting that the ÌìÌÃÊÓƵ highly values its long-standing partnership with China. He remarked that in UIBE, the University has found an elite partner that shares a consensus on the urgency of the digital economy and the necessity for robust, sustainable financial governance. President Zhao Zhongxiu echoed these sentiments, welcoming the ÌìÌÃÊÓƵ delegation as vital partners in fostering the next generation of global economic leaders.
Following the successful trip to Beijing, a senior delegation from UIBE is scheduled to visit the ÌìÌÃÊÓƵ campus in February 2026. This follow-up engagement will focus on operationalising faculty exchanges and launching joint research initiatives in the fields of financial technology and green investment.
According to Dr Xiaoxiang Zhang, the MoU represents more than a formal agreement; it is a commitment to impactful, cross-border cooperation. For the ÌìÌÃÊÓƵ community, the alliance ensures a direct link to one of the world's most dynamic financial hubs, promising long-term benefits for students and researchers alike as they navigate a digitally integrated global economy.
